How Solar Power Works

Just how do solar panels generate electricity? Below is the process and equipment used to help produce your own clean, more affordable energy.

How Solar Power Works Diagram

Solar Panels—Solar Panels cover the roof. They are made of photovoltaic cells. These cells convert solar energy to direct electricity through semiconducting materials. Power generation from this effect is a cleaner more sustainable energy resource-the Sun!

Inverter—Can be installed either in an exterior wall in your house or your garage. The inverter takes the direct energy from the solar panels and converts it to alternating current electricity.

Electrical Panel—Electrical Panel/Breaker Box- The alternating current electricity is then sent to the breaker box and then to power your home.

Utility Meter—Measure your house energy usage. When more electricity is generated in your household and there is an excess amount it goes back into the grid. Your meter then spins backwards adding credit to your bill.

Impact on the environment

Solar power is clean, pure energy from the sun. When a house uses solar there is less greenhouse gas emissions and a reduction on the dependence on fossil fuel.
Traditional electricity comes from fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas. Toxic gases are emitted when fossil fuels are burned causing pollution and global warming. Fossil fuels are a finite resource causing Limited availability which creates a volatile market in which energy prices can skyrocket in a short period of time.

U.S. Residential Solar Overview

wOver the past decade, there has been a surge in residential solar installations in the U.S., as the benefits of going solar have become increasingly clear. A tiny market in the early 2000s, residential solar has grown almost 75% annually since 2008 due to significant declines in manufacturing costs and increased economies of scale.

More solar panels have been installed in the U.S. over the last 24 months than in the previous 30 years combined. This rapid growth has been driven by Homeowners looking to save money, increase the value of their homes, help the environment and achieve energy independence. While solar adoption was once inspired primarily by a desire to support the environment, the compelling economic benefits of solar are now a key reason many Homeowners are making the decision to go solar.
Simplified installation processes, full service offerings, performance and maintenance guarantees coupled with significant cost savings, are supporting the projections for continued high growth in U.S. solar for the foreseeable future.

Commercial Solar

gigGreen Is Good for Business

More and more businesses each year have decided to invest in solar energy because it makes both financial sense and makes sense for the environment.  What a powerful message to your customers and employees that your company cares about the future of the earth for our children and future generations.
This not only can carry a positive public relations effect but can often help influence purchasing decisions and create customer loyalty. It makes good business sense? Commercial solar installations have increased by 487% in the past 5 years.
